The Journey Museum & Learning Center is excited to announce the next event in its Spring Learning Forum series, “The LostPioneer”. Beginning at 2 p.m. on Sunday, February 18th, archaeologist Katie Lamie will take a behind-the-scenes look at the five-year project that asked the question, “Who was the Deadwood Pioneer?”
“The Lost Pioneer” Learning Forum will be held in The Journey’s Wells Fargo Theater. Over five years ago, remains of a young man who lived before 1878 were found buried in an unmarked grave in Deadwood, SD. Lamie will explore the efforts to identify the young man, focusing on the process summarized in South Dakota Public Broadcasting’s Deadwood Pioneer : A Face from the Past documentary. She will be joined by Dr. Hopper, a Deadwood dentist who performed the initial dental exam on the lost pioneer. Together, they will delve into the cutting-edge tools and science used to ultimately create a lifelike reconstruction of the Deadwood Pioneer’s face.
Katie Lamie, Senior Archaeologist and Repository Manager at the South Dakota State Historical Society Archaeological Research Center in Rapid City, directed the state’s burial program efforts during the discovery and archaeological excavation of the historic Deadwood human skeletal remains in March 2012.
Learning Forums are wide-ranging, thought-provoking presentations. Each program features a forty-five minute presentation, followed by an open forum with questions and discussion about the topic. Admission is $12 for adults, $10 for seniors, half-off for members & free for students with a paid adult/senior admission (includes museum admission).
