DESCRIPTION:Created in 2004\, the NHSRA Junior High Division was established to bring the excitement of the sport to 6th\, 7th\, and 8th graders and to serve as a feeder system into the high school ranks of the Association. Today\, all 48 states and provinces that belong to the NHSRA also produce a Junior High Division as well\, with over 2\,500 members in total now competing. Junior High Division students compete in a variety of events\, including Barrel Racing\, Pole Bending\, Goat Tying\, Breakaway Roping\, Tie-Down Roping\, Chute Dogging\, Team Roping\, Ribbon Roping\, and Junior Bull Riding\, Bareback Steer Riding and Saddle Bronc Steer Riding.

Special displays will also include various wooden objects which were created using the theme “Down On The Farm.” Live demonstrations of wood turning\, scroll sawing\, computer-controlled routers\, and hand tools will occur all day. There will be special\, free activities for the children including having their names cut out of wood by a RCWA member using a scroll saw. Kids will also receive a free\, toy wooden tractor.

DESCRIPTION:To start the week off\, the Paleontology Club from the South Dakota School of Mines will present programs about the park’s paleontology resources at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Saturday\, April 22\, in the park’s visitor center auditorium. Club members will talk about the park’s paleontology history\, demonstrate how to pick micro fossils and showcase bones from their collection.\nAs part of National Park Week\, rangers will be offering free tours on Saturday\, April 22. The Fairgrounds Tour\, a 90-minute tour that features two different levels of the cave and 450 steps\, will run at 9:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. The hour-long Garden of Eden Tour will be at 11:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. and has 150 steps. All tours start from the visitor center. You can visit www.receation.gov to book your free tour\, save for the $1 ticketing fee\, up to three days prior. A limited number of tickets will be available Saturday on a first come\, first served basis. Paid tours will run daily throughout the week at these same times.\nWind Cave’s National Park Week celebration ends with a bird walk on Sunday\, April 30. Join Black Hills Parks & Forests Association member\, Dr. Jen Fowler\, for this two-hour activity while she shares her tips and tricks for identifying birds. Meet at the Wind Cave visitor center at 9 a.m. for this two-mile hike. Bring binoculars if you have them\, dress for the weather\, and wear sturdy hiking shoes. Guidebooks\, cameras\, and trekking poles are recommended but not required. This free activity is open to all ages.\nNational Park Week is an annual national celebration of people\, parks\, trails\, heritage areas\, national trails and rivers\, seashores\, historic sites\, and beautiful landscapes that together tell the story of our nation. Many national park sites across the nation will waive entrance fees on April 22.

SUMMARY:Black Hills Chamber Music Society: Axiom Brass
DESCRIPTION:Described as “exceptional ambassadors for classical music” and “innovative programmers”\, Chicago-based Axiom Brass designs concert experiences for audiences that stretch the imagination and expand sensibilities. Their concert programs regularly pair original works by composers such as Christopher Rouse\, George Walker\, and Augusta Read Thomas with early musical translations by Barbara Strozzi and rousing tangos by Astor Piazzolla. As strong advocates for the creation and performance of “living music”\, the ensemble actively engages with their audiences to showcase the importance of performing the music of living composers. Axiom has presented concerts all over the world\, including the Merkin Concert Hall in New York City\, Gallo Center for the Arts in California\, Shenzhen Concert Hall in China\, and Museu Nacional Soares dos Reis in Portugal.\nIn 2021\, to celebrate the 100th birthday of Argentinian composer Astor Piazzolla\, Axiom Brass recorded an entire album showcasing his music entitled Astor\, becoming the first brass quintet to record an entire album of Piazzolla’s works.\nIn 2016\, the Chicago-based ensemble commissioned ten new works to celebrate their 10th anniversary\, including compositions by Augusta Read Thomas\, Liduino Pitombeira\, David Faleris\, Matt Ulery\, and Ben Hjertmann. These compositions can be heard on their album\, First Impressions.\n​The only brass ensemble to ever win the Fischoff Educator Award\, Axiom creates custom- tailored workshops and residency activities for presenters and their communities. The group’s commitment to education and their interactive teaching style has led to residencies at the Grand Tetons Music Festival and the Boston University Tanglewood Institute\, as well as being featured as ensemble-in-residence for the National Brass Symposium.

DESCRIPTION:The Little Sisters of Sisters of Hoboken return to the Sturgis stage after a 12-year hiatus. We last saw the Little Sisters in 2011 and now those humble nuns\, with a bit of the show biz bug\, will return this summer singing and dancing into your hearts from Thursday\, June 22 – Sunday\, June 25.\nThe cast includes all of our favorite nuns: Sister Mary Paul (formerly know as Amnesia ever since a crucifix hit her on the head and she lost her memory)\, Sister Mary Leo (maybe on roller skates and who wants to be the first nun ballerina)\, Sister Robert Anne\, the tough character from Brooklyn\, Sister Mary Hubert\, Mistress of the Novices\, and of course\, Sister Mary Regina\, the Mother Superior. This large cast edition also offers parts for Father Virgil\, Sisters Mary Wilhelm (convent nurse)\, Julia\, Child of God (convent cook)\, Mary Brendan (teacher)\, Mary Luke (teacher)\, Brother Timothy\, and a chorus of other nuns\, brothers\, priests\, and students.\nAuditions will be held Sunday and Monday\, April 30 and May 1\, from 6:00-8:00pm each evening at Grace Lutheran Church\, located at 1061 Sherman Street\, in Sturgis. You don’t need to prepare anything\, just come and show us your sparkling…. um\, we mean\, HOLY self and be prepared to read from the script and sing and dance a few steps. Please note – rehearsals will be in the evening hours throughout May and June – please make sure your schedule is clear so that you won’t miss rehearsals.\nTech people also needed – please come to auditions and let us know you’re interested.
