SUMMARY:"Culture Through Art: A Celebration of Native American Expression." at Wind Cave

This Native Americans’ Day\, Monday\, October 9\, Wind Cave National Park explores this question within the theme “Culture Through Art: A Celebration of Native American Expression.”\nThere are multiple activities throughout the day\, starting in the Visitor Center auditorium at 9 a.m. with a welcome from park Superintendent Leigh Welling and National Park Service (NPS) Native American Affairs Liaison\, Dorothy FireCloud. SUMMARY:Crazy Horse Memorial®: Native Americans’ Day Celebration
DESCRIPTION:Crazy Horse Memorial® will host its annual Native Americans’ Day celebrations on Monday\, October 9\, 2023. The all-day event features a Native Americans’ Day Program\, hands-on activities\, and performances by Pamyua\, a nationally acclaimed Alaska Native performance group.\nThe Native Americans’ Day Program begins at 10:00am and will feature speaker Dr. Jacob Weasel (Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe) who recently ascended Mount Everest in his quest to summit the highest points on all seven continents. His journey is aimed to raise funds for his non-profit\, The Wopila Project\, for playground equipment at Lakota Homes in Rapid City. The Program will also host participation dancing with the familiar face of Starr Chief Eagle who has spent over 10 years teaching visitors at Crazy Horse Memorial® and students in the Rapid City Area School system.\nCrazy Horse Memorial Educator of the Year\, which honors an individual who has made significant contributions to Native American education in the last year\, will be named. The award includes a $1\,000 grant to the recipient’s school library or to programs of his or her choice that help indigenous students. Last year’s Crazy Horse Memorial Educator of the Year was Dr. Joseph Marshall III (Sicangu Lakota)\, an educator and administrator who has worked at both high school and college levels\, a founding member of Sinte Gleska University\, and the author of over 20 published works that include non-fiction\, novels\, screenplays\, and collections of short stories and essays.\nHands on activities for all ages will feature the creations of dream catchers and bracelets. These activities will be guided by regional Native American artists. In addition to the crafts\, hands-on activities such as a coloring wall will be on display so visitors young and old can draw what Native Americans’ Day means to them.\nPamyua will take to the Veranda Stage in the afternoon to share their Inuit culture and unique blend of music and dance through three different interactive sessions at 12:30\, 1:30\, and 4:30. Pamyua was created by brothers Phillip and Stephen Blanchett with a musical concept to blend Inuit drum/dance melodies with R&B vocal styling and arrangements. Joining the Memorial all the way from Alaska\, they bring a high-energy\, educational presentation that all ages will enjoy. In coordination with Custer Area Arts Council\, Pamyua will be visiting Southern Hills area schools the following week.\nAs always\, free tatanka stew will be available for lunch to all visitors while supplies last\, courtesy of Korczak’s Heritage\, Inc.\, Laughing Water Restaurant®\, and Custer State Park.\nAll crafts\, programs\, and performances are included at no additional cost when you visit the Memorial. South Dakota was the first state to officially celebrate Native Americans’ Day on the second Monday of October annually since 1990.\nThe South Dakota Legislature established the Native Americans’ Day holiday at the urging of Gov. George S. Mickelson\, then governor of South Dakota. The transformed holiday was a direct result of correspondence between the editor of Indian Country Today\, Tim Giago\, and the governor. Giago\, an Oglala Lakota hailing from Pine Ridge Indian Reservations\, had written a column in the Lakota Times expressing the need for change. In addition to the newly created holiday\, Mickelson further declared 1990 as a “Year of Reconciliation” in observance of the 100th anniversary of the Wounded Knee Massacre.\nThe first Native Americans’ Day observance was held at Crazy Horse Memorial® and more than 1\,200 people attended the event on October 8\, 1990. “We can’t turn back the clock\,” Gov. Mickelson said\, “we can only turn to the future together. What we can do as leaders\, both Native American and white\, is teach others that we can change attitudes.” The Native Americans’ Day celebrations at Crazy Horse Memorial® will be the 33rd annual for South Dakota.\nFor more information\, please visit www.crazyhorse.org and follow Crazy Horse Memorial® on all social media and/or contact Amanda Allcock at 605-673-4681 or email Amanda.Allcock@crazyhorse.org.\nAbout the Crazy Horse Memorial Foundation\nThe Mission of Crazy Horse Memorial Foundation is to protect and preserve the culture\, tradition\, and living heritage of the North American Indians. The Foundation fulfills its mission by continuing the progress on CRAZY HORSE MEMORIAL®\, the world’s largest mountain sculpture; acting as a repository for Native American artifacts\, arts and crafts through THE INDIAN MUSEUM OF NORTH AMERICA® \, and the Museum’s Native American Educational & Cultural Center®; and by establishing and operating THE INDIAN UNIVERSITY OF NORTH AMERICA®.

SUMMARY:Glen Miller Orchestra in Concert
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, October 12th\, at 7:00pm in the Sturgis Community Center Theater\, as the Sturgis Area Arts Council brings you the world famous Glen Miller Orchestra! Admission for this wonderful event is $25 per person\, payable at the door that evening. We accept cash and personal checks only… although there is an ATM in the community center if needed. We will be taking reservations over the phone\, but we will not be reserving specific seats. To get your name on the reservation list\, please call Marlene at 605-347-1375 or Dedi at 605-490-2984\nThe Glenn Miller Orchestra is a fully self-contained group consisting of the music director\, five saxophone players\, four trumpeters\, four trombonists\, three rhythm musicians (piano\, bass and drums)\, and two vocalists.\nThe big-band business today requires constant travel with an arduous schedule of one-night stands. The Glenn Miller Orchestra is “on the road” longer and more continuously than any other in the world. It covers over a hundred thousand miles a year\, working most every night for 48 weeks out of every 52-nearly 300 playing dates\, performing for an “in person” audience that adds up to more than a half million people annually. The orchestra has performed in all 50 United States\, as well as throughout Europe\, Australia\, Iceland\, New Zealand\, Guam\, the Philippines\, South and Central America.\nGlenn Miller and his Orchestra made a big impact right before and during the war. And it had more hit records in one year than anybody in the history of the recording industry. In fact\, it’s recording of Chattanooga Choo-Choo earned the first Gold Record ever awarded to a performing artist. Back in the days of the big band era of the forties\, any dance band “worth its salt” had a distinctive theme song. It was the musical signature with which they signed on and signed off at their engagements and radio broadcasts. The theme of Glenn Miller and His Orchestra was the beautiful Moonlight Serenade\, and it is still the signature tune of the Glenn Miller Orchestra today. Interestingly enough\, Glenn Miller originally wrote the music of the song himself as an exercise for a course in arranging. He composed it long before he organized his band\, when he was a trombonist and arranger with Ray Noble’s famous band. Today\, it is considered a standard in the field of popular music with its popularity as an instrumental continuing undiminished through the years.

SUMMARY:Dropkick Murphy's at the Monument
DESCRIPTION:Celtic punk band Dropkick Murphys are coming to The Monument in Rapid City on Thursday\, October 12 with special guests The Interrupters and Jesse Ahern. Tickets start at $39.50 plus applicable fees and go on sale Friday\, May 19\, at 10 a.m.\nAbout Dropkick Murphys\nDropkick Murphys proudly remain Boston’s rock ‘n’ roll underdogs turned champions. Since 1996\, the boys have created the kind of music that’s meant to be chanted at last call\, in packed arenas\, and during the fourth quarter\, third period\, or ninth inning of a comeback rally. Their celebrated discography includes four consecutive Billboard top 10 album debuts (Turn Up That Dial\, 11 Short Stories Of Pain & Glory\, Signed and Sealed in Blood\, Going Out In Style)\, along with 2005’s gold-selling The Warrior’s Code featuring the near double platinum classic “I’m Shipping Up To Boston.” Whether you caught a legendary gig at The Rathskeller (The Rat) under Kenmore Square\, found the band by taking the T to Newbury Comics to cop Do Or Die in ’98\, discovered them in Martin Scorsese’s Academy Award winning The Departed\, or saw ‘em throw down at Coachella (or one of hundreds of other festivals)\, you’ve become a part of their extended family. Dropkick Murphys’ music has generated half-a-billion streams\, they’ve quietly moved 8 million-plus units worldwide and the band has sold out gigs on multiple continents. In 2020\, the band was one of the first to embrace streaming performances\, starting with their Streaming Up From Boston St. Patrick’s Day virtual performance. It was followed by their landmark Streaming Outta Fenway livestream\, which drew more than 5.9 million viewers and held the #3 spot on Pollstar’s “Top 2020 Live Streams” chart. Dropkick Murphys St. Patrick’s Day Stream 2021…Still Locked Down\, was #1 on Pollstar’s Livestream chart for the week ending March 22\, 2021\, logging over 1 million views. Dropkick Murphys returned in 2022 with their first-ever all-acoustic album\, This Machine Still Kills Fascists (Dummy Luck Music / [PIAS])\, and seated theater tour. This Machine Still Kills Fascists–and their follow-up album Okemah Rising–breathe musical life into mostly unpublished lyrics by the legendary Woody Guthrie\, curated for the band by Woody’s daughter Nora Guthrie.\nAbout The Interrupters:\nFormed in 2011\, The Interrupters came together when the Bivona brothers – guitarist Kevin Bivona\, bassist Justin Bivona\, and drummer Jesse Bivona – found themselves on various bills with Aimee (Interrupter) as a solo artist. Upon bonding over musical tastes\, the four formed The Interrupters and delivered their self-titled debut in 2014. The Interrupters have shared stages with bands such as Rancid\, blink-182\, Green Day\, Bad Religion\, and many other stalwarts of the punk scene\, solidifying the band’s status as a dynamic force. The band released their fourth studio album\, In The Wild\, in August 2022.\nAbout Pepper Entertainment\nEstablished in July of 2006\, Pepper (PE) is based in Sioux Falls\, SD.
