Black Hills Community Theatre is heading outside this summer with their Outdoor Summer Series. BHCT will be performing two shows on the lawn to the west of the Performing Arts Center/Rapid City High School (corner of 7th St. and Columbus St). As a thank you to loyal patrons, the event is free and open to the public (donations accepted). Just bring your chairs or blankets to the large outdoor area, perfect for social distancing, up to an hour before the performance time. Masks are not required, but strongly encouraged for patrons who have not yet been vaccinated.
The series will begin with Sense and Sensibility. Hilarious and heartbreaking, Kate Hamill’s adaptation of this Jane Austen classic is a true breath of fresh air. Set in late 18th-century England, the story follows Elinor and Marianne Dashwood, whose lives are upended when their father abruptly dies, leaving them penniless and with reputations at stake. Together the women must learn to mix sense with sensibility to find happiness in a society where love is ruled by money. This production is recommended for ages 12 and older.
Sense and Sensibility is directed by Merlyn Q. Sell, who has previously directed Macbeth and Flaming Guns of the Purple Sage for BHCT. The cast of local actors includes Dave DeChristopher, Alexis Evon, Tom Fulbright, Ann Hengen, Cassidy Manley, LaRee Mayes, Lynne Mazzone-Olness, Jeffrey Alan Smith, Rachel Snyder, Tae Swanson, and Matthew Vidal.
The second show in the series will be Charlotte’s Web performing at the same location July 17-25th.
