The placing of this granite bench will be on the museum grounds, at the same location where the EC-135 A Model aircraft, Tail #10262 sits. This aircraft was once flown by crew members of the 4th Airborne Command Control Squadron.
A reunion honoring the 25th Anniversary of the 4ACCS Deactivation is June 22 – 25, 2017 with events (Welcome Reception, Banquet, ending with Sunday Breakfast) at the Rushmore Plaza Holiday Inn, Rapid City; June 22 at the Mount Rushmore Lighting Ceremony; June 23 bus tour to Minuteman Missile National Historic Site, Delta–09 Launcher (Cactus Flat), Wall Drug, Ellsworth AFB and the SD Air & Space Museum; June 24 Memorial Dedication at SD Air & Space Museum.
The 4th Airborne Command Control Squadron was activated in April 1970, branching off from the 28th Air Refueling Squadron, located at Ellsworth AFB, 8 miles east of Rapid City, South Dakota. The squadron provided an airborne and auxiliary command post and a communications link for Fifteenth Air Force and Strategic Air Command.
Crews from the 4ACCS occasionally flew “Looking Glass” missions to back up the SAC airborne command post. The Ellsworth bunch was the second crop of ALCS-ers, behind those originally qualified at Offutt AFB for Looking Glass duty. The squadron flew the EC135A/C and G models and was deactivated in October 1992.
