Show Debates Focus of Mother’s Day Being About Moms or Wives

Bobby reminded listeners that Mother’s Day was approaching on Sunday.

He noted that it would be his first time celebrating the holiday as a father. He he had never previously experienced the occasion in that way, adding that his mother had passed away years ago and that he is not a mother himself. Eddie, who has been a father for 18 years, confirmed that Mother’s Day is a big deal in his household. The previous year had not gone well because his wife’s birthday fell just days before the holiday, and they treated the celebrations as one. He said they would not repeat that mistake. When asked about this year’s plans, Eddie said they would keep it simple but make it special, mentioning food and balloons as part of the day. Lunchbox had only recently been reminded about Mother’s Day after another parent mentioned it during a discussion about a Sunday baseball practice. He said he would figure something out, suggesting he might make breakfast, noting that moms typically enjoy that gesture.

Bobby then discussed a difference he noticed between Mother’s Day and Father’s Day expectations. He said his wife expressed a desire to spend quality time with family on Mother’s Day, while he felt that if asked about Father’s Day, he would prefer to spend time doing something like playing golf. He acknowledged the contrast, saying it felt like mothers tend to want internal, family-focused celebrations, while fathers often lean toward external activities. Eddie agreed with the observation, while Bobby added that if his wife wanted to spend several hours doing something independently, he would support that, but she preferred family time.

The show then referenced a public service announcement from Kevin Christopher on TikTok, which stated that for men with wives and children, Mother’s Day should prioritize their wife over their own mother. The statement prompted a debate among the group. Eddie agreed with the sentiment, while Lunchbox disagreed, arguing that a man’s mother should take priority because she is the one who gave him life. He suggested that the holiday could be split, with individuals honoring their own mothers while children celebrate their mothers. Bobby questioned whether Lunchbox was attempting to avoid putting effort into celebrating his wife, which Lunchbox denied. Lunchbox maintained that while he would still celebrate his wife, he believed Mother’s Day was more significant for his own mother. Eddie added that it’s easier for some of them because their moms do not live nearby, a phone call or sending flowers would suffice. When asked to choose a single priority if forced, Eddie selected his wife, while Lunchbox chose his mother.
