Amy said no and added that she tries not to judge people by how they look. Eddie agreed and then shared a recent experience that happened while he was waiting in a grocery store parking lot. Eddie had dropped his wife off at the store and planned to circle the parking lot while she shopped. While slowly driving, a woman got out of her car and began walking directly in front of his vehicle in the driving lane. Eddie continued driving slowly behind her since she was in his path. He said the woman looked back at him as if she thought he was following her. Eddie was not following her and recalled that she had stepped in front of his car. She continued walking, looked back again with concern, and then quickly went into the store.
Then about 30 seconds later, two security guards came out and appeared to be looking at him. He believed the woman had reported him as suspicious. Eddie was driving his wife’s Chevy sedan and questioned why he was being profiled. He also noted that his kids were in the car at the time. Eddie stayed in the parking lot, and as the security guards came outside, his wife came out with groceries. He got out and helped load the groceries while looking at the guards. Amy pointed out that the security guards were likely responding to someone who felt threatened and were doing their job. Eddie replayed the situation in his head, wondering what the woman told them. He assumed she described him as a suspicious man following her.
