Larry Luitjens is the winningest coach in South Dakota history with a total of 748 wins. His son Lance will discuss Larry’s 47-year-career. Lance’s book, “A Coach of Influence” will be available for sale at the museum on March 18. The book highlights Larry’s story and his work with Coaches of Influence (COIN), a Christian organization that encourages coaches to be positive influences on athletes.
Larry started his head coaching career in DeSmet, South Dakota for the 1967-1968 season. The very next year, he took the Bulldogs to the championship and lost to Onida 93-90. He would go on to win the State B tournament the following two years. In 1973, Luitjens became the head coach for the Custer Wildcats where he would add five more state championships to his resume. In 47 years, Luitjens made it to the championship game 13 times, winning seven.
