At 2pm on Monday, November 12th, the Custer School District will present an hour-long Veterans Day program in the Custer City Armory. For 24 years the program has been sponsored by the American Legion and completely run by students to honor are veterans. It consists of Civil Air Patrol flag posting, patriotic music performed by all classes, the band and the choir, POW/MIA ceremony, a guest speaker, remembrance of veterans deceased over the past year, individual recognition of each veteran in attendance by Custer Cub Scouts and the 6th Grade Class, and Civil Air Patrol flag retirement. This year’s guest speaker will be Larry Zimmerman, Secretary of the South Dakota Department of Veteran Affairs.
This is a large community event involving the entire school district. It shows small town America at its patriotic best. Because it is being conducted the year 1 day following Veterans Day (due to the 4-day school week) it offers all a great opportunity to extend their Veterans Day activities.
