Turtle Soup – “Sheriffs of Pennington County”

February 22, 2019 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Feed your mind and your belly with Turtle Soup, featuring a presentation on historic Black Hills figures or events and a bowl of soup provided by Angel’s Catering.

This week, Helene Duhamel presents the “History of the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office.”

Pennington County has a rich history of the Old West. Early life was harsh, and settling the county was, at times, even harsher. The sheriff played an important role in taming the frontier. Duhamel will take you back to the origins of the Pennington County Sheriff ’s Office and tell stories of the people who made it possible.

You’ll also hear about past jailbreaks and current news from the Pennington County Jail. Sheriff Kevin Thom and local author/historian Pat Roseland will be present to answer questions about the history of the sheriff ’s office.

The Pennington County Sheriff ’s Office serves more than 100,000 residents, along with a high number of visitors and tourists.

Duhamel is a third-generation broadcaster and a fifth-generation South Dakotan. She joined the family business in 1981 at KOTA-TV in Rapid City, graduating a few years later with a degree in mass communication from Stanford University.

Over her career, Duhamel was an accomplished reporter, assignment editor, producer, anchor and news director.

She stepped down as a news director after being diagnosed with Hodgkin’s disease at the age of 29.

In the spring of 2017, Duhamel joined the Pennington County Sheriff ’s Office as the public information officer.

Admission for Turtle Soup is $12 for adults, $10 for seniors and half-off for members. Call 394-6923 to reserve seats.
