TMSG: Mother Raises $35K For School Custodian That Helped Her Son

Raymond Brown has worked as a custodian at White Oak Elementary School in Edenton, North Carolina for over 15 years. Thousands of students, parents, and faculty members have been touched by this special mean.

Brown means so much to the community that he was nominated to win the North Carolina School Heroes contest and potentially win $10K. Unfortunately, he wasn’t chosen as one of the winners. But one mom made sure that wasn’t going to be the ending to the story.

Adrian Wood has four children, each of which attended and are attending White Oak Elementary School. Her youngest, 7-year-old son Amos has autism. She shared with Today“Sending three typical kids to school — you’re sad, but you’re excited for them. Sending Amos to school was such a different path. He was three when he started school. He was in diapers and he didn’t speak. But after Mr. Brown started saying ‘hello’ to him and calling him ‘Famous Amos,’ Amos started saying, ‘Hey Brown,” when he saw him. He wasn’t even saying ‘Daddy’ at that point, so it was really something.” Brown’s affection for Amos helped the 7-year-old fit in with his fellow students.

When Wood shared her story about Brown and him not winning the award on her Facebook page, her community stepped up. Followers wanted to donate to the custodian. Within a week, her viral Facebook post raised $35,000 for Brown.

I cried when I heard the news.

I’m not much of a crier, at least over losing a contest.

I’m not competitive, but this…
