Matthew McConaughey On Not Auditioning For Roles & Running For Governor

Matthew McConaughey’s incredible benefit concert to help those in Texas impacted by the winter storms. He stopped by The Bobby Bones Show to talk about the big concert, how fans can still help, his book Greenlights, a possible run for Governor of Texas, and if he still auditions for his acting gigs.

McConaughey and his whole family lives in Austin, Texas. He’s a proud supporter of his hometown and state and wanted to do everything he could to help that community in the wake of the winter storms that impacted several areas in Texas. He put together the We’re Texas: A Virtual Benefit Concert featuring performances from George Strait, Willie Nelson, Kacey Musgraves, Kelly Clarkson, Miranda Lambert, Post Malone, Parker McCollum, Randy Rogers, Don Henley, Gary Clark Jr., Khalid, Kirk Franklin, Leon Bridges, Lukas Nelson, and Lyle Lovett. He told Bones that he was able to get in touch with all of the performers within 24 hours and pretty much all of them were a “yes” instantly. 100% of the proceeds are going to McConaughey’s Just Keep Living Foundation’s Texas Relief Fund. The virtual benefit will be available for fans to watch for the entire month, and they can make donations at any point in time during the month. The “Just Keep Living” phrase has been around for years, it was inspired by McConaughey’s father who passed away in the 90s. Fans can watch the We’re Texas: A Virtual Benefit on McConaughey’s YouTube page here.

He couldn’t stop by the show without Bobby Bones asking some questions about McConaughey’s popular book, his acting gigs, and all the buzz around him running for Governor of Texas. McConaughey admitted that he doesn’t have to audition for gigs anymore. He doesn’t remember the last time he’s auditioned for a role, but also added if he wants a role bad enough and there’s some competition for that particular role, he will throw himself in the ring willing to audition. Though, every time he’s done that the other actor backed out of the running. McConaughey isn’t competitive about all things in his life, just at certain things that are as important as his career is to him. As for the run for Governor, McConaughey said consideration is all it really is at this point. He’s had quite a few close people in his life come to him unsolicited and tell him that it’s a good idea for him to run. He joked with the show about the fact the decision has him at at yellow light, just like the ones he references in his book.

If you were listening to The Bobby Bones Show in recent months, you would have heard Eddie talk about reading Greenlights and then deciding to go on one of McConaughey’s infamous diets for a movie role. McConaughey admitted that the diet Eddie decided to do wasn’t that hard for him to stick to. He believed that if he wasn’t able to lose the weight for the role, then he would be embarrassed. So to him he had no other option than to follow through with the diet. He also added that he didn’t put himself in front of a lot of temptation and basically became a hermit. His wife Camila cooked up most of the meals for him and she helped make it all not as hard.
