TMSG: Teacher Donates Kidney To Police Officer

Captain Jerrell Smith heads the Patrol Division of the Fort Valley Police Department, where he’s spent the last 27 years of his life. But for the last 5 years, he’s been on dialysis waiting for a new kidney.

His girlfriend Tara Craig works at Perry Middle School. Craig was talking to Smith’s girlfriend and she was very concerned about Smith and him needing a kidney. Craig has always wanted to donate a kidney, especially because she does a research project on kidney transplants with her 6th grade students every year.

Craig went home over the weekend and told 13 WMAZ that she just really prayed adding, “I really feel like this is just what God is calling me to do.” She told Smith’s girlfriend, “I know this is crazy, but I really want to donate my kidney.”

Despite not being an exact match, Craig was able to join a donor pairing program with Smith, which moved them to the top of the donor list. Just a few weeks later, tehy found a match for Smith.
