Coach Monica Says No Season 2 Of ‘Cheer’ In The Works Yet, But Possible

In the last few months, a documentary about cheerleading on Netflix has gained massive popularity. The show is called Cheer and it follows the Navarro College’s competitive cheer squad as they work to win a coveted national title. The show has gained fans of all kinds as many learn the intense athleticism it takes to be a competitive cheerleader.

Monica, otherwise known as Coach Monica, called into The Bobby Bones Show to talk about how the whole show came about. Monica shared that she was contacted back in 2017 from the same producers of Netflix’s Last Chance U. Those producers were playing around the idea of doing a documentary about cheerleading, Navarro was just one of the schools being considered. During the consideration stage, film crews came out to Navarro’s practices for a few days and things took off from there. Monica said she didn’t think the show would be as big as Last Chance U, she just assumed it would be a big deal within the cheerleading community. Monica continued saying that none of them were prepared for the popularity that came from the show and now she says, “we’re just trying to keep our heads above water.”

Although all of the individuals in the show are gaining fame, that didn’t stop the intense cheerleading practices from continuing on. Monica says she has goals set for everything each week and they will add practices if they don’t hit their designated goals. And despite what people may think, she says having the film crew there wasn’t a distraction at all, instead the crew became like family with the cheer team.

When Monica finally got to watch the finished piece back, she shared that she got really emotional. She confessed that she knows a lot of the details her cheerleaders shared, but there were some things she didn’t know. She has loved to see them succeed within her team, but now with the success of the show. Because of the Netflix docuseries, there has been a tourist boom in Corsicana, Texas. Fans of the show have come to the town just to see them, even to cheer them on while cheering at basketball games.

The show’s popularity has fans wanting more. Monica shared that she doesn’t know if there will be a Season 2 of Cheer, but her and her team would be up for the opportunity again.
