Pursuit

At around 1:50 a.m. on September 27th, police were dispatched to the onramp to Catron Boulevard from Cambell Street for a report of a driver unconscious at the wheel of a vehicle stopped in traffic. On arrival, police located the vehicle with the driver slumped over inside. The vehicle was still running and spike strips were placed in front of the vehicle. Police were able to put the vehicle in park and turn the ignition off before attempting to wake the driver. As officer worked to talk to the driver, they noted the strong smell of an alcoholic beverage, as well as the odor or marijuana coming from the vehicle. The driver, later identified as 29-year-old Derrick Truax of Box Elder, was very slow to wake, and police noted he was slurring his words as he spoke. As police attempted to remove him from the vehicle, he resisted, and was able to start the car and drive away. A traffic stop was attempted, but the vehicle did not stop. Officer pursued the vehicle eastbound before it turned to head north on Elk Vale Road. The suspect vehicle then turned to head eastbound on Interstate-90 before exiting on Highway 14-16, then turning south on Radar Hill Road. After turning onto Fox Tail Drive, the vehicle finally came to a stop. Truax was ordered out of the vehicle and taken into custody. A search of the suspect vehicle turned up a glass pipe, along with marijuana. Truax was placed under arrest for DUI (6th Offense), Eluding, Obstruction, Possession of Marijuana, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.
