At around 7:20 p.m. on September 19th, an officer observed a motorcycle westbound on Mall Drive travelling at a high rate of speed. The officer’s radar clocked the bike at 72 miles per hour in a 40 mph zone. Police attempted a traffic stop on the motorcycle. It did not stop and turned southbound onto Haines Avenue. The pursuit was terminated as the bike approached the congested construction area near Disk Drive. A short time later, dispatch advised police that a motorcycle had crashed at I-90 Exit 57. It was also reported that the rider had picked the bike up in an attempt to flee the scene. Police responded to the area and located the rider, identified as 20-year-old Andrew Weishaar of Rapid City. After speaking to multiple witnesses, police determined that Weishaar had run a red light through the construction zone and weaved in and out of traffic as he got onto the interstate. Witnesses also advised that Weishaar had struck a street sign at exit 57, causing the crash. Weishaar was transported to the hospital for treatment of injuries sustained in the crash. Once cleared medically, Weishaar was placed under arrest for Aggravated Eluding, Reckless Driving, Stoplight Violation, Improper Passing, and Expired License Plates. He was transported to the Pennington County Jail.
