Kacey Musgraves Says Album Of The Year Grammy Win Was ‘Definite Disbelief’

It’s been almost two months since Kacey Musgraves scored the Album of the Year win at the 61st annual Grammy Awards, but the country titan still seems in disbelief over the massive Golden Hour honor.

As Glamour magazine’s new cover girl, the 30-year-old singer/songwriter recalled the February accolade, which saw her beat out Cardi B (Invasion of Privacy), Brandi Carlile (By the Way, I Forgive You), Drake (Scorpion), H.E.R.(H.E.R.), Post Malone (Beerbongs & Bentleys), Janelle Monáe (Dirty Computer) and the Black Panther soundtrack. “It was a moment of definite disbelief, but also openheartedness,” she admitted. “I was flashing back through writing all the songs, meeting my husband, recording everything, and all the positivity that’s come my way through all of this. It was this overwhelming sense of gratitude. I love these songs so much. I have a man that loves me so much and inspired a lot of it. I have a team that works hard.”

While the lifetime achievement prompted Musgraves’ emotions to swirl in all different directions, she tried her best to hold it together and make sure that she completed one goal while she was on-stage. “I was trying to think, ‘OK, don’t forget anybody,'” she recalled of the moment.

With new-found fame, courtesy of the Grammy wins, which also included Best Country Solo Performance and Best Country Song, Musgraves told the magazine that she’s trying to take the same slow and steady approach to her next project as she did with Golden Hour. “I’ve been really rushed into projects before. There’s something fun to that, because it makes you operate on gut instinct,” she explained. “But with Golden Hour, I got to take my time and experiment and write and write and write and write and catch a creative wind. I love having that.”
