Brett Young is a great songwriter, and he’s had the chance to work with other great writers like Charles Kelley of Lady Antebellum, Ben Caver and Justin Ebach, who co-wrote his latest single, “Here Tonight” with him. But there have been times when Brett has gotten into a room with another writer, only to realize that the chemistry and the ideas aren’t there, and the best thing that could happen is just to get the write over with so he can get out of the room. Brett admits, “I’m so bad at confrontation, so I will write the most terrible song I’ve ever written in 15 minutes and call it a song to get out of the room.”
Sometimes if the other person throws out an idea and Brett thinks it’s terrible, he’ll tell them it’s a great idea and just write the song to put the session out of its misery because he says, “I never want to tell somebody I hate the idea. But there are those uncomfortable situations … I’ve gotten to the point where I’m like, I’ll set a time and be like I bet I can finish this song in 12 minutes. But that’s always tricky. I think there’s a bunch of different ways to get out of a room but hopefully you get out with a number one.”
So far every song Brett has released in his career has gone to number one, with “Here Tonight” looking like it will be his fifth in just a few weeks, so he hasn’t had to endure too many of those awkward and uncomfortable writing sessions.
