Amy’s Pile: Delivery Bots are Coming

An autonomous delivery robot startup called Starship is deploying their first batch of robots as part of a commercial service.

They began delivering food to 40,000 students, faculty and staff at George Mason University in Fairfax, Va. in partnership with Sodexo, a food and facilities management company. The deliveries are slated to take 15 minutes or less on average. It all depends though on which items the customer ordered and where they’re located on campus. Each little robot can carry up to 20 pounds of food.

At the start, there will be 25 bots roaming around campus delivering food from Pizza, Starbucks, Dunkin’ and other food retailers. Delivery fee is only $1.99.

This is the second launch with Starship’s robots. They have completed 25,000 deliveries since October when they started the robots delivering packages to residents in the U.K. town of Milton Keynes.
