Local law enforcement warns of bomb threat hoax email

The Rapid City Police Department and Pennington County Sheriff’s Office have been made aware of a scam email targeting local businesses and organizations. The email claims that an explosive device has been secretly planted at a business or organization and threatens that the device will be detonated, unless they receive payment. In many of the reported cases, payment is requested using the online currency known a BitCoin.

Officers of the Rapid City Police Department have investigated several such claims in Rapid City, and determined them to be unfounded. This is an email that is being circulated throughout the United States. At this time, no such devices have been located at any of the businesses/organizations reporting the email in South Dakota.

Law enforcement at the local, state, and federal level are all aware of this hoax email threat. Those receiving any such email should delete it immediately.
