Hit & Run/DUI

At around 6:00 p.m. on October 3rd, police were dispatched to 1710 Cambell Street for a report of a hit & run crash that had just occurred. On arrival, police made contact with the driver of the vehicle which was struck by the suspect vehicle. The victim told police she was in line at the restaurant’s drive-through when she was rear-ended by a Ford Explorer SUV. As the SUV attempted to turn out of the drive-through line, the victim’s vehicle was struck a second time. The suspect vehicle had left the address by the time police arrived. The SUV was located a short time later at the intersection of E. Omaha Street and Cambell Street. According to witnesses, the driver of the suspect vehicle stopped behind another vehicle at the red light. At some point while stopped, the driver of the SUV (identified as 33-year-old Tyler Wright of Rapid City) got out of the vehicle and began pounding on the driver’s side window of the vehicle stopped in front of him. An off-duty deputy of the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office was in an adjacent vehicle when he saw this altercation take place. The off-duty deputy exited his vehicle, took Wright to the ground, and pinned him there long enough for police to arrive. Police noted the strong smell of an alcoholic beverage coming from Wright’s person. A search of Wright’s vehicle turned up several open alcohol containers and a glass marijuana pipe. Wright was placed under arrest for DUI, Open Container in a Motor Vehicle, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, and Leaving the Scene of an Accident. He was transported to the Pennington County Jail.
