Carrie Underwood Gets Real About ‘Freak Accident’: ‘It Just Wasn’t Pretty’

For the next few months, Carrie Underwood is probably going to be hit with several questions about her November accident, which landed her in the hospital with a broken wrist and 40 stitches to the face, so the American Idol champdecided to get candid about the debacle during her recent appearance on the Today show.

“Plain and simple, it was just kind of a freak accident,” Underwood told Hoda Kotb during the interview, which aired on Thursday (May 10). “I just fell. I just tripped taking my dogs out to do their business. It could happen to anybody. I say if I would have fallen anywhere else, it wouldn’t have been a problem. There was one little step that I went to catch myself on and I missed. In the beginning, I didn’t know how things were going to end up. It just wasn’t pretty.”

Underwood admitted that she was alone during the incident, adding that her 3-year-old son, Isiah, was asleep upstairs. After the fall, she was rushed to the hospital and took months to recover from the accident out of the public limelight.

When Kobt told the chart-topper, who recently released the video for her new single, “Cry Pretty,” that she didn’t look very different, a sense of relief took over the singer. “I have a dedicated team of professionals who can spackle and paint and paste,” she admitted. “Every day I’m feeling a little more back to normal.”
