Brantley Gilbert Meets with Waffle House Shooting Hero

Brantley Gilbert knows a hero when he sees one.

“The Ones That Like Me” singer took time Wednesday (April 25) to meet the man who is being hailed a hero in the Waffle House shooting that occurred in the early morning hours Sunday just outside of Nashville.

But while James Shaw Jr., wrestled the gun away from shooter and prevented any further deaths, the 29 year old doesn’t feel like a hero, telling reporters he “just wanted to live.”

But Brantley feels otherwise.

“Bad people do bad things. But good people can do great things,” Brantley said at a Nashville rehearsal hall alongside Chris Carrabba of Dashboard Confessional. “Talking to James before we got up here, he said he’s not a superhero, he’s just a regular person. But I think there has to be some hero inside, that’s where that kind of bravery comes from.”

At their May concerts, Brantley and Carrabba will sell T-shirts with the slogan “I Believe in Heroism” and an image of Shaw’s bandaged hand, which was burned when he pulled the gun away from the shooter. The proceeds will benefit both Shaw and the families of the four victims who lost their lives in the tragedy.

“When you see someone like James, who just jumped up and did what he did—and you think about the lives he saved, you realize what a special kind of guy he is,” Brantley adds.

The “I Believe in Heroism” shirts can also be purchased online here.
