Search Warrant

At around 4:00 p.m. on August 16th, police were getting ready to execute a search warrant at a residence in the 200 block of East Monroe Street. Prior to the warrant being served on the residence, police observed a vehicle leaving the house. The warrant included this vehicle and a traffic stop was attempted. The vehicle did not stop and a short pursuit ensued. The vehicle came to a stop at a residence in the 1100 block of Farlow Avenue. Police observed a single male suspect flee from the vehicle on foot. A perimeter was established around the area, and a police K9 was called to track the suspect. The K9 unit tracked the suspect to a garage behind the residence. The suspect was located hiding behind a door, and gave up once he saw the dog. The man, identified as 30-year-old Maurice Wilford of Rapid City, was taken into custody. A search of the vehicle turned up five firearms, two of which have been identified as stolen. Wilford was placed under arrest for Obstruction, Receiving Stolen Property, and Possession of a Firearm with a Prior Felony Conviction.

It’s worth noting that the RCPD K9 Unit has been working very hard lately to apprehend feeling suspects. Just yesterday, the K9 Unit was deployed to help track suspects fleeing from two separate pursuits. The Officer Matt Hower and K9 Jary were responsible for the apprehensions in both incidents. They are the most recently-certified K9 team on the RCPD and have put in countless hours to become as proficient as they are in finding and apprehending individuals who run from justice.
