The cast of the film “Hidden Figures” celebrate their win at the SAGAwards; Kevork Djansezian/WireImage(LOS ANGELES) — Hidden Figures, Orange Is the New Black and Stranger Things were among the winners at the 23rd Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards, but politics took center stage at Sunday’s event, carried live on TBS and TNT from the Shrine Auditorium in Hollywood.
Many of the winners used their acceptance speeches to address President Donald Trump’s executive order on immigration by spreading messages of unity and tolerance.
The cast of Netflix’s Stranger Things won for outstanding ensemble in a drama, and cast member David Harbour fired up the audience with his impassioned speech about unity. “We are all human beings and we are all together on this horrible, painful, joyous, exciting and mysterious ride that is being alive,” he declared.
Mahershala Ali, a first-time winner for outstanding male performance in a movie for his role in Moonlight, said he knew tolerance was possible because his mother — an ordained minister — wasn’t pleased with his decision to become a Muslim 17 years ago, but that they “put things to the side” since.
Julia Louis-Dreyfus, a repeat winner for outstanding female in a comedy series for Veep, recalled that her father fled France after the Nazi invasion, and called the immigrant ban, “un-American.”
On a lighter note, Denzel Washington, who took home his first SAG Award for his role in Fences, joked that he wasn’t expecting to win Sunday, saying, “I am a God-fearing man. I’m supposed to have faith, but I didn’t have faith.”
Bryan Cranston, Sarah Paulson, John Lithgow, Claire Foy and William H. Macy were honored for performances in television, while Viola Davis and Emma Stone won for performances in movies. Orange Is the New Black took home the award for Outstanding Ensemble Cast in a Comedy Series.
Lily Tomlin was the recipient of this year’s Life Achievement Award, presented to her by her 9 to 5 co-star, Dolly Parton.
