“Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” and “Collateral Beauty” Among This Weekend's New Movies

Felicity Jones in “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story”; Lucasfilm/Disney(NEW YORK) — Here’s a look at the new movies opening nationwide Friday:

* Rogue One: A Star Wars Story — Felicity Jones stars as Jyn Erso, who leads the rebel alliance as they steal plans for the Death Star, which later enabled Luke Skywalker and the rebels to destroy it. Diego Luna, Bill Mendelsohn, Forest Whitaker, Riz Ahmed and Alan Tudyk also star. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was released by Lucasfilm, which is owned by ABC’s parent company, Disney. Rated PG-13.

* Manchester by the Sea — A grieving janitor, played by Casey Affleck, is forced to take care of his teenage nephew after the boy’s father dies. His return home also re-opens a terrible tragedy.  The film’s receiving considerable Oscar buzz. Rated R.

* Collateral Beauty — Will Smith stars as a successful New York advertising executive who withdraws from life after suffering a horrible tragedy. He questions the universe by writing to Love, Time and Death, who appear to him in the form of Keira Knightly, Jacob Latimore and Helen Mirren, respectively. Eventually, he begins to see how the three tie together. Edward Norton, Kate Winslet and Michael Pena also star. Rated PG-13.

* Fences — An African-American father, played by Denzel Washington, comes to terms with the events of his life as he struggles with race relations and raising a family 1950s America, in this film based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning August Wilson play. Viola Davis also stars. Fences opens in limited release only. Rated PG-13.
