“Manchester by the Sea,” Many TV Series Nab Multiple Screen Actors Guild Nods

Amazon Studios – 2016(LOS ANGELES) — The Matt Damon-produced drama Manchester by the Sea hit a four-nomination high water mark with the Screen Actors Guild Awards, the nominations for which were read by Sophia Bush and rapper/actor Common in L.A. this morning.

There was a two-way tie for second place in both the film categories, with Denzel Washington’s play adaptation Fences, and the already multiply-nominated drama Moonlight landing three nominations each.

The films Florence Foster JenkinsHacksaw RidgeHidden FiguresLa La LandCaptain Fantastic, and Lion all earned two nods apiece.  The SAG awards are traditionally  a good predictor when it comes to the acting categories at the Oscars, but not a great predictor for best picture.

Surprisingly, critics’ darling La La Land was not nominated in the top category of Outstanding Performance by a Cast.  Why?  Likely because the movie is all about its two stars, Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling, and not the entire ensemble.

On TV side, the much-talked-about Netflix series Stranger Things, as well as Game of Thrones, Westworld, The Crown and People Vs. OJ Simpson received three nods each.
