“Doctor Strange” Holds Its Spell on the Box Office with $43 Million Weekend

Marvel Studios/Disney(NEW YORK) — The Marvel Studios release Doctor Strange, starring Benedict Cumberbatch, topped the weekend box office for the second week in a row, adding $43 million in estimated earnings and bringing its domestic total up to over $153 million. It’s the second-fastest of the studio’s single-character intro features to reach that mark, behind 2008’s Iron Man, according to Box Office Mojo

Coming in second was the animated musical Trolls, with an estimated $35 million. The film, featuring the voices of Justin Timberlake and Anna Kendrick, has raked in $94 million, already surpassing Storks and closing in on The Angry Birds Movie after just ten days.

Two of the week’s new releases, Arrival, starring Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner and Forrest Whitaker, and Almost Christmas, featuring Danny Glover, Gabrielle Union and Mo’Nique, finish third and fourth, respectively, earning $24 million and $15.5 million.

Hacksaw Ridge, starring Andrew Garfield, rounds out the top five with $10.77 million.
