Courtesy of PeopleA few weeks ago, People magazine published the story of one of its former reporters, Natasha Stoynoff, who claimed Donald Trump, then the Republican candidate for president, groped her during a 2005 interview.  After Trump threatened to sue, People said it stood by Stoynoff’s account.  But now that People has put President-Elect Trump on its cover, the Twitterverse is incensed over the magazine’s perceived hypocrisy.

People tweeted the cover with the caption, “He’s hired! Donald Trump is elected 45th President of the United States in stunning upset.” The cover line reads, “President Trump: his life, his family and his astonishing journey to the White House.”

Director Judd Apatow slammed the magazine on Twitter, writing, “F*** @People magazine. How disgusting. Selling their soul. Soon the happy Donald cover. Sell those mags! F*** your employees.”

Emmy-nominated actress Zoe Kazan tweeted, “@people your own writer was assaulted by this man. Now you look the other way for profit? Normalizing him is shameful. I won’t stand for it.”

She added, “#BOYCOTTPEOPLEMAGAZINE. Celebs: do not give them your interviews or sell them your pictures Readers: do not give them your money. This matters.”

Two and a Half Men star Jon Cryer joined in, first calling for a boycott of the New Balance footwear brand for publicly backing Trump, and then adding, “And while we’re at it .”

The Hollywood Reporter posted screenshots of Chrissy Teigen‘s protected tweets to People, in which she wrote, “If I didn’t love you guys so much, I wouldn’t feel so sick. So much for that writer, eh?”

Other media outlets called People out for its positive coverage of the president-elect and his family, which included tweeting 27 photos of Ivanka Trump and her family, as well as a family portrait of the Trumps.

In a statement to ABC Radio, a People spokesperson defended its decision to cover Trump, saying, “Donald Trump’s win is a history-making news event that warranted the cover of the magazine. The story is not a celebration or an endorsement and we continue to stand by Natasha Stoynoff, whose account of being attacked by Trump in 2005 is recounted in this week’s cover story.”
