“Hamilton” Tony Winner Daveed Diggs On His “black-ish” Troublemaker

ABC/John Fleenor

(NEW YORK) —  Daveed Diggs, who won a Tony for playing Thomas Jefferson and the Marquis de Lafayette in Hamilton, is now part of the cast of black-ish, playing a recurring character: Johan, the flighty brother-in-law of Anthony Anderson’s high-strung Dre.

Johan, the brother of Tracee Ellis-Ross’ doctor character Rainbow, is a constant thorn in the side of Anderson’s straight-laced patriarch of the Johnson clan, due to the younger man’s laissez-faire attitude about life.

“They experience blackness very differently, right?” Diggs told Kelly Ripa on Tuesday on ABC’s Live with Kelly.

“There’s a generational gap that didn’t exist in this show that my character came and sort of filled in,” Diggs says of Johan. “I’m like a hipster and sort of post-race…you know, I’ve traveled the world and made no money and don’t work.”

black-ish has a new episode Wednesday night at 9:30 p.m. Eastern on ABC.
