“Doctor Strange” Conjures Up Huge Foreign Debut

2016 – Marvel Studios(LOS ANGELES) — Marvel Studios’ latest blockbuster, Doctor Strange, bested expectations over the weekend, and raked in $86 million from a handful of overseas markets.

The Disney-owned studio reports that the film, which has yet to open Stateside, made nearly 50% more than did Ant-Man, 37% more than Guardians of the Galaxy, and $23 million more than Captain America: Winter Soldier — all of which turned out to be massive hits domestically — from moviegoers in Korea, France, the UK and elsewhere.

Doctor Strange‘s eye-popping visuals meshed well with IMAX, making for the super-sized screen format’s all-time biggest October opening internationally; at more than 1,000 screens, Strange will be the largest IMAX roll-out in history.

The movie which stars Benedict Cumberbatch as the titular surgeon-turned-Sorcerer Supreme, opens in the US and Canada on November 4, with many other foreign markets to follow.

Marvel Studios is owned by Disney, the parent company of ABC News.
