Also appearing on the show was special musical guest Kenny Loggins, who sat in with the band. Ahead of his appearance, Jimmy asked Kenny if he would play “Danger Zone” — the theme from Cruise’s 1986 blockbuster film Top Gun — when Cruise comes out. Kenny joked that he didn’t know it, then  assured Jimmy “Oh, it will happen!”

Sure enough, when Cruise was introduced, Loggins played the song. “When you hear ‘Danger Zone,’ does that make you want to jump in your jet, grab Goose and go hunt down some bogeys or whatever?” Kimmel asked.  Cruise laughed and said it made him want to jump on his motorcycle. He also mentioned that Tuesday was actually the first time he’d ever met Loggins.

Jimmy spent much of the interview on Top Gun, pointing out that the film is now 30 years old and asking Cruise if he ever catches the film on Netflix, Cruise responded, “I watch it every day.”

But will there be a Top Gun sequel?  Cruise didn’t say no, declaring, “You know, it’s just gotta be right, that’s all. I mean, we just gotta figure it out.”

The two did chat a little about Cruise’s new film, Jack Reacher: Never Go Back.  Kimmel pointed out that Cruise’s character spends a lot of the movie beating people up. He asked the actor if he enjoyed watching himself do that, to which Cruise replied, “It’s very satisfying.”

Jack Reacher: Never Go Back opens Friday.
