“The Voice” Recap: Latest Battle Rounds Episode Features Three Steals

Trae Patton/NBC(LOS ANGELES) — The second week of The Voice‘s battle rounds began Monday night.

Blake Shelton, Miley Cyrus and Alicia Keys all had steals left to use — in Blake’s case, two steals — and they all took advantage. Adam Levine had already used his two allotted steals.

This season’s advisers were in the rehearsal room to help out the artists. Sammy Hagar worked with Team Adam, Joan Jett with Team Miley, Bette Midler with Team Blake, and Charlie Puth with Team Alicia.

Team Adam hit the stage first, with Johnny Rez facing off against Nolan Neal. They duetted on Peter Gabriel’s “Sledgehammer.”

After watching the two battle it out, Miley said their harmonies were tight, and that she was shocked to see Johnny perform the way he did. Adam said his two artists captured the spirit of the song. He named Nolan the winner of the battle. Johnny was not stolen by another coach.

Karlee Metzger and Darby Walker of Team Miley were next up. They sang Melanie’s “Brand New Key,” a choice that adviser Joan Jett called quirky but memorable.

Adam called the contestants’ performance on The Voice stage the “the Miley-est thing ever, in the best way.” Alicia enjoyed the way Karlee owned the song. Miley said Karlee has transformed so much in a short amount of time. Having said that, Miley held on to Darby. Blake then stole Karlee.

Speaking of Blake, he assigned Blaine Long and Josh Gallagher the Ronnie Milsap tune “Stranger in My House.” Blaine admitted in rehearsals he was unfamiliar with it. Adviser Bette Midler noted that he has a lot of “masculine power” but it’s as if he’s afraid to unleash it. She added that Josh “killed it” after some earlier struggles.

After Blaine and Josh sang for the coaches, Adam said the two are “super compatible,” but he would lean towards Josh because there’s “more to be discovered” with him. Blake praised Blaine’s talent; however, he chose Josh as the winner because, he said, Josh pushed himself. Blaine was dismissed.

The show then briefly recapped three battles. Dana Harper was victorious over Team Blake teammateTarra Layne, Belle Jewel defeated Halle Tomlinson in a Team Alicia battle, and Simone Gundy advanced over JSOUL for Team Adam.

Team Alicia presented Josh Halverson and Kylie Rothfield, who went head-to-head on The Animals’ “House of the Rising Sun.” But first, there was a reunion in rehearsals — it turns out adviser Charlie Puth is a former schoolmate of Kylie’s at Berklee College of Music.

Charlie was undoubtedly proud when Kylie ended up winning the battle. To Alicia’s delight, Miley stole Josh.

Team Blake’s Christian Fermin and 15-year-old Gabe Broussard tackled the Hoobastank hit “The Reason.”

After the two delivered on stage, Miley revealed that her famous dad, Billy Ray Cyrus, had her get him an iPod when “The Reason” was released specifically because he wanted to listen to the rock hit. Blake commented that Gabe’s singing can be real and personal. He added that Christian can hit the high notes and “play with it.” Blake kept Gabe on his team. Christian is gone from the competition.

In the final battle of the night, Aaron Gibson and Sa’Rayah were paired up for Team Miley. They covered “I’ll Take Care of You,” originally recorded by Bobby Bland. Joan Jett expressed mild concern that Sa’Rayah was focused too much on showing off her talent.

Miley declared that both of them were a “picture of my team. You’re what I wanted my team to represent.” Aaron remains on Team Miley, but Blake and Alicia both tried to steal Sa’Rayah. She ended up with Alicia.

NBC will air the final battles of the season Tuesday night at 8 p.m. ET.
