Natasha Bure on “The Voice”; Tyler Golden/NBC(LOS ANGELES) — It was the first night of the battle rounds on The Voice Monday night, as teammates went head-to-head for the right to advance to the next stage in the competition. Among the contestants who took part: actress Candace Cameron Bure’s daughter, Natasha Bure.
Each coach enlisted the help of a guest adviser during rehearsals: Sammy Hagar, for Adam Levine’s team; Bette Midler, for Blake Shelton’s team; Joan Jett, for Miley Cyrus’ team; and Charlie Puth, for Alicia Keys’ team.
Each coach has two steals during the battle rounds.
The first battle of the season featured two Team Alicia artists: Christian Cuevas and Jason Warrior. Their coach assigned them the Adele hit “Hello.” Adviser Charlie Puth praised Jason’s tone, comparing it to John Legend, while encouraging Christian to hit the “false voice.”
Alicia loved Christian and Jason’s performance on The Voice stage, so much so that she banged her chair with her hand at the end of it. She admitted that she’d gestured so wildly — hurting her hand in the process — because she was “so taken” by the both of them. She chose Christian as the winner, but Adam stole Jason, noting that Jason was the first contestant he turned around for this season.
Natasha Bure, the 17-year-old daughter of Full House actress and The View co-host Candace Cameron Bure, returned to take on crooner Riley Elmore in a Team Adam battle. They sang Michael Bublé’s “Cry Me A River.” Natasha was nervous during rehearsal, but adviser Sammy Hagar urged her to turn that emotion into excitement.
After watching the two in action on stage, Blake said Natasha sold the performance better. Alicia liked the purpose in Riley’s singing, and said if it was up to her she’d choose him as the winner. That’s what Adam ended up doing, telling the cameras that Riley is an impressive vocalist. Natasha was not stolen by one of the other coaches.
In the first Team Miley battle, Ali Caldwell faced off against Courtnie Ramirez. They belted out “Hit Or Miss” by Odetta. Adviser Joan Jett said their voices were “so crazy” — in a good way, of course.
Blake said Courtnie was strutting around like a rooster during her and Ali’s performance on the Voice stage. He was mocked by the other coaches for that comment. Miley picked Ali as the winner. Both Blake and Alicia tried to steal Courtnie. She landed on Team Alicia.
Team Blake’s Sundance Head and Dan Shafer joined forces on the Bad Company tune “Feel Like Makin’ Love.” Bette noted in rehearsals the warmth radiating out of Sundance, and felt Dan was holding back.
The two delivered a rockin’ performance for the coaches. Alicia Keys told Sundance, “You are your own beautiful being,” who’s free and wild. Miley complimented the way Dan used the stage and involved the audience. Blake chose Sundance as the winner. It was the end of the road for Dan.
Billy Gilman, the 28-year-old former country star who scored a Grammy-nominated hit, “One Voice,” at age 11, battled Team Adam teammate Andrew DeMuro on Michael Jackson’s “Man in the Mirror.” Hagar pointed out how effortless Gilman’s singing was during rehearsals.
After watching Billy and Andrew take on the King of Pop in person, Blake commented that he wasn’t sure he’d seen a more evenly matched battle on the show. Adam kept Billy on his team, and Andrew was eliminated.
In the final battle of the night, Team Alicia’s Lauren Diaz and Wé McDonald covered “Maybe” by Janis Joplin.
Blake praised Wé for hitting big notes, but added that Lauren threw in some high notes herself. Alicia noted how difficult the song is to perform and how difficult her decision would be. She named Wé the winner. Afterward, Miley and Adam both tried to steal Lauren. Lauren joined Team Miley.
The battles continue Tuesday night at 8 p.m. ET on NBC.
