“The Birth of a Nation,” “The Girl on the Train” Open Today

The Birth of a Nation — Nate Parker wrote, directed and stars in the story of Nat Turner’s 1831 Virginia slave rebellion. The film has made headlines in recent weeks, in part because of a 17-year-old rape case involving Parker in which he was found not guilty. Armie Hammer and Gabrielle Union also star in the film. Rated R.

* The Girl on the Train — In the adaptation of Paula Hawkins’ bestseller, Emily Blunt plays Rachel, “the girl on the train,” who becomes fascinated by a couple she sees out the window during her commute. When the female half of the couple goes missing, Rachel gets caught up in one big murder mystery. Rebecca Ferguson, Haley Bennett, Justin Theroux, Luke Evans, Allison Janney, Edgar Ramirez, Lisa Kudrow and Laura Prepon also star. Rated R.

* Middle School: The Worst Years of My Life — A middle school student and his best friend decide to break every rule in the school handbook. Comedy ensues. Griffin Gluck, Lauren Graham, Rob Riggle, Thomas Barbusca and Andy Daly star. Rated PG.
