“Blade Runner” Sequel Is Now: “Blade Runner 2049”

ABC/Randy Holmes(LOS ANGELES) — The anticipated sequel to the seminal sci-fi movie Blade Runner now has a title. To commemorate exactly a year until the movie hits theaters, Warner Bros. has revealed the film will be called Blade Runner 2049.

The 1982 original took place in 2019, meaning the amount of “movie time” that passed has been a little less than 35 years — that’s if 2049 refers to the year at all.

Director Denis Villeneuve is calling the shots for former director Ridley Scott who returns to produce; also returning is Harrison Ford as the weary android hunter Rick Deckard, who in the original is part of an elite squad known as Blade Runners, who are charged with terminating stray androids.

The groundbreaking original had Deckard hunting a group of these “replicants” who mutinied on their spaceship, killing their human crew, and traveling — and scattering in dystopian Los Angeles.

Ryan GoslingRobin WrightDave Bautista, and Jared Leto also star; the plot is still unknown.

Blade Runner 2049 will hit theaters on October 6th, 2017.
