Will Arnett Bringing Back “The Gong Show” for ABC

(LOS ANGELES) — ABC’s had good luck bringing back old-school game shows like Match Game and $100,000 Pyramid.  Now they’re reviving the The Gong Show

LEGO Movie and former Arrested Development star Will Arnett is producing the update. The series, which ran from 1976-78 on NBC, and in syndication from 1976 to 1980, had performers of various levels of talent doing their thing for a panel of judges, who could bang a gong to give them the hook if things got too bad.

Unlike previous iterations, the Internet will now be the pool from which producers choose “talent.”

There was once an attempt to bring the show back in 1988, but it was short lived.

Show creator and former host Chuck Barris was the subject of the 2002 film Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, directed by George Clooney and starring Sam Rockwell as Barris.  Based on his autobiography, the dark comedy explored Barris’ alleged double life as a CIA hitman.
