Eva Green in “Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children”; Jay Maidment/Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation(NEW YORK) — Tim Burton’s latest film has found a home on top of the weekend box office.
Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children opened in first place after earning an estimated 28.5 million dollars from Friday through Sunday.
In the film, which is based on the novel of the same name, a boy named Jake discovers a refuge for kids with strange abilities. Its cast includes Eva Green, Asa Butterfield, Ella Purnell, Allison Janney, Terence Stamp and Samuel L. Jackson.
Deepwater Horizon, a drama about the 2010 explosion of the BP oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico, debuted in second place, collecting 20.6 million dollars. Mark Wahlberg stars in the Peter Berg-directed movie.
Last week’s box office champ, The Magnificent Seven, dropped to the third spot after making 15.7 million dollars.
The new action-comedy Masterminds, with Zach Galifianakis, Owen Wilson, Kristen Wiig, Jason Sudeikis, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones, landed in sixth place, with 6.6 million bucks.
The chess drama Queen of Katwe, featuring David Oyelowo and Lupita Nyong’o, finished in seventh place in its first weekend in wide release, with a 2.6-million-dollar debut.
