Billy Gilman on “The Voice”; Tyler Golden/NBC(LOS ANGELES) — Week one of the new Voice season continued Tuesday night, with more hopefuls participating in the blind auditions.
Adam Levine, Blake Shelton and new coaches Miley Cyrus and Alicia Keys were back in their fancy rotating chairs, looking to add new members to their respective team. One of the most noteworthy artists of the two-hour episode: Grammy-nominated singer Billy Gilman.
Here are the highlights from Tuesday night’s episode:
Sa’rayah had her choice of either Miley or Alicia after belting out Ray Charles’ “Drown in My Own Tears.” Miley said Sa’rayah brought hope and love to the room. Alicia, exaggerating just slightly, said Sa’rayah blew her back to the end of the galaxy with her vocals. Sa’rayah joined Team Miley.
Ethan Tucker, 26, infused a reggae flavor into The Police hit “Roxanne.” At the last moment, Blake and Adam turned around. They were both persuaded by Ethan’s final note. Ethan went with Blake.
The Voice then replayed an audition that previously aired in its post-Olympics preview episode last month: We McDonald, 17, with her version of Nina Simone’s “Feeling Good.” All four coaches were interested in her. She ended up with Alicia.
Andrew DeMuro, who once sang on stage with Billy Joel, covered the Piano Man’s “Vienna.” During the critique, there was a brief reference to Blake’s relationship with occasional Voice coach Gwen Stefani; when Adam referred to him as charming and sexy, Blake said he has a girlfriend, to which Adam replied, “We know. The whole world knows.” Andrew picked Adam.
Billy Gilman, a 28-year-old former country star who scored a Grammy-nominated hit, “One Voice,” at age 11, is looking to revive his career. He sang Adele’s “When We Were Young.” All four coaches turned around for him. Blake knew him as soon as he said his name afterward. He said he was happy to see Billy in the spotlight again. Miley subsequently recognized Billy, too. Billy is teaming up with Adam.
Miley added Sophia Urista to her team after the contestant rocked out to The Beatles’ “Come Together.” It helped that Miley showed Sophia a video of her godmother, Dolly Parton, encouraging her to join Miley.
Speaking of Dolly, Brendan Fletcher convinced three coaches to turn around with his take on “Jolene.” Blake was the only who didn’t turn around. Adam, who’s now Brendan’s coach, claimed Brendan can be “The Voice.”
Lauren Diaz, who competed on the show America’s Most Talented Kid when she was 13, closed the night with a rendition of Alicia’s “If I Ain’t Got You.” Alicia was the first to turn around, with the other three coaches following suit, though they figured Lauren would pick Alicia. Alicia sealed the deal after singing the same tune, inserting Lauren’s name into the lyrics.
The Voice returns with more auditions next Monday night on NBC.
