Curtis Hanson in 2011; Jeff Kravitz/FilmMagic(LOS ANGELES) — Curtis Hanson, who won an Oscar for co-writing the screenplay to the 1997 movie L.A. Confidential and later directed Eminem in the 2002 movie 8 Mile, has died.
A spokesman for the Los Angeles Police Department tells the Los Angeles Times that Hanson, who was 71, was pronounced dead at his Hollywood Hills home Tuesday following reports of a medical emergency.
The spokesman said Hanson died of natural causes.
Hanson co-wrote and directed L.A. Confidential, a tale of murder and police corruption in the 1950s that was based on the James Ellroy novel of the same name. It was nominated for nine Oscars and won two; besides the screenplay trophy, it earned a best supporting actress statuette for Kim Basinger.
L.A. Confidential also starred Kevin Spacey, Russell Crowe and Guy Pearce.
Aside from 8 Mile, Hanson’s directing credits also included The Hand That Rocks the Cradle, The River Wild, Wonder Boys and In Her Shoes. The most recent film he directed was the 2012 surfing movie Chasing Mavericks, which starred Gerard Butler.
