Arthur Hiller (center) receives an honorary Academy Award in 2002 with presenters and “Love Story” stars Ryan O’Neal and Ali MacGraw; Ron Galella/WireImage(LOS ANGELES) — Arthur Hiller, best known for directing the 1970 romantic tragedy Love Story starring Ali MacGraw and Ryan O’Neal, died Wednesday in Los Angeles of natural causes, according to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, for whom he once served as president. He was 92.
The Canadian filmmaker started out in radio before directing numerous episodes of television series, including Perry Mason, Alfred Hitchcock Presents and The Rifleman.
In addition to Love Story, Hiller directed more than 30 feature films, most notably The In-Laws and Neil Simon’s The Out-of Towners and Plaza Suite.
Hiller served as the 29th president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences from 1993-97, and was president of the Directors Guild of America from 1989-93. He received the guild’s Robert B. Aldrich Achievement Award in 1999.
Hiller’s wife of 68 years, Gwen, died in June. He’s survived by his children Erica and Henryk, as well as five grandchildren.
