Courtesy of Warner Bros. Pictures(LOS ANGELES) — One of the stars of the Jump Street reboot series, Jonah Hill, says he doesn’t think a reported mashup with the Men In Black films will ever take off.
The project, tentatively called MIB 23, was to have Hill’s and Channing Tatum’s undercover cop characters joining the alien investigation agency. It was unclear if Will Smith or Tommy Lee Jones would have been involved.
“I had the idea, but I doubt that movie will get made,” the Oscar nominated Wolf of Wall Street star admits to the Toronto Sun.
He cites rights issues between the two franchises as the biggest block to he and Tatum donning those trademark MIB black Armani suits. “It’s too complicated. They’re trying to make all the deals, but it’s kind of impossible with all the Men in Black stuff.”
The actor adds, “The Jump Street films were so fun to make and the whole joke of them was they were making fun of remakes and sequels and reboots and then now it’s become a giant sequel, reboot. It’s almost become what we were making fun of and it’s hard to maintain that joke when it’s so high-stakes.”
Hill does admit all isn’t lost, however. “I love Channing and I love Street series [directors] Phil Lord and Chris Miller and I love making those movies — they’re a lot of fun. So I hope it works out.”
Further complicating matters? Both the box office implosion of another studio attempt to mess with a beloved franchise, the all-female Ghostbusters, and the poor box office performance of Disney’s Alice Through The Looking Glass; the latter was helmed by MIB 23‘s planned director, James Bobin.
