“Star Trek Beyond” Lands in First Place at Weekend Box Office

Paramount(NEW YORK) — Star Trek Beyond beamed up to the top spot at the weekend box office.

The third movie in the rebooted Star Trek franchise earned an estimated 59.6 million dollars to open in first place.

Star Trek Beyond was directed by Justin Lin, who took over the reigns from J.J. Abrams. The movie features Chris Pine, Zoe Saldana, Zachary Quinto, Simon Pegg, Karl Urban, John Cho and the late Anton Yelchin, plus newcomer to the series Idris Elba.

After two weeks in first place, the animated hit The Secret Life of Pets slipped to second place, collecting 29.3 million dollars.

The new horror flick Lights Out tied for third place with Ghostbusters; both made 21.6 million dollars.

Ice Age: Collision Course followed with a 21-million-dollar debut.

Here are the top 10 movies from Friday through Sunday, with estimated ticket sales, according to comScore:
