Netflix(NEW YORK) — Netflix is backing a second season of its six-Emmy-nominated documentary series Making a Murderer. According to a press release from the streaming service, the forthcoming installments will delve back inside the story of convicted murderer Steven Avery and his co-defendant Brendan Dassey, as their defense teams again challenge their clients’ convictions and life sentences — and prosecutors fight to have them upheld.

The pair was convicted in the 2005 murder of Teresa Halbach — wrongly so, insist their lawyers and many fans of the gripping series.

“The episodes will offer exclusive access to Avery’s new lawyer Kathleen Zellner and Dassey’s legal team, led by Laura Nirider and Steve Drizin, as well as intimate access to the families and characters close to the case,” Netflix promises.

The acclaimed series’ creators, Laura Ricciardi and Moira Demos, said in the statement, “We are extremely grateful for the tremendous response to, and support of, the series. The viewers’ interest and attention has ensured that the story is not over, and we are fully committed to continuing to document events as they unfold.”

A release date for the sophomore season — and how many episodes it will contain — have yet to be announced.
