HBO says season six, which ended three weeks ago, averaged just over 25 million viewers an episode when you count people watching live, on DVR, and on their digital platforms. That’s a massive surge of 25 percent over last season, and makes Game of Thrones the most-watched show on TV this year — it’s definitely the most watched show ever on HBO.

Also, the way people are watching is changing: HBO says almost 40 percent of viewing happens via apps or on demand.

There will be more time than usual for Game of Thrones fans to build anticipation for the new season.  HBO revealed Monday that season seven will debut later than usual next year – spring instead of summer – and will consist of only seven episodes, rather than the usual ten.

Until then, you can get your fix when the primetime Emmy Awards air September 18 on ABC: Game of Thrones has a leading 23 nods going into the ceremony.
