“Modern Family's” Ariel Winter Explains Why She Got Breast Reduction

ABC/BOB D’AMICO(LOS ANGELES) — On ABC’s hit comedy, Modern Family, starlet Ariel Winter plays a teenager in college. But at 5’1 with size 32F breasts, her cup size made it hard for her to play a teen realistically onscreen. So Winter got a breast reduction, a decision she’s finally opening up about.

Winter told Glamour magazine that she decided to get the surgery after she couldn’t find clothes that fit her large breasts. It didn’t help that she was heavily scrutinized on red carpets for her top heavy physique.

“We live in a day and age where everything you do is ridiculed,” she said. “The Internet bullies are awful. I could post a photo where I feel good, and 500 people will comment about how fat I am, and that I am disgusting. …I definitely seemed confident; I’m an actress, that’s what we do. But on the inside, I wasn’t feeling so happy.”

Not to mention, Winter said she endured back problems. “I really couldn’t stand up straight for a long period of time. It started to hurt so bad that I couldn’t take the pain. My neck was hurting so bad and I actually had some problems with my spine,” she explained. “I had been discussing my chest with doctors for many years, but when I finally said, ‘I’m thinking of doing this,’ he said, ‘Your back is going to thank you so much.'”

Winter, who is now a D-cup, said her doctor helped her decide on her new size. “He said he didn’t think we should go smaller than a C, and I agreed. And the reason I said that was because I have always been a curvier girl. Always. And I enjoy being a curvier girl,” she said. “I don’t want to be disproportionate again. I have a big butt, I like having a big butt. I didn’t want to have a big butt and no boobs!”

After her surgery, Winter told her Modern Family co-stars such as Julie Bowen and Sofia Vergara. But her male co-stars refused to mention it. “It’s funny, it’s like the guys don’t want to say anything, so they don’t and they just are like [thinking] ‘There’s a change,'” she said, laughing. “Everyone is really happy for me and has been super supportive. They understand I’ve been struggling with this for so many years.”

Modern Family returns to ABC Wednesday, September 23 at 9 p.m. ET/PT.
