Henry Cavill and Armie Hammer Play Cold War Spies in “The Man from U.N.C.L.E”

ABC/Fred Lee(NEW YORK) — Henry Cavill and Armie Hammer star as spies — the American, Napoleon Solo, and the Russian, Illya Kuryakin — in The Man from U.N.C.L.E. In the film, the two must work together during the Cold War for the titular international espionage agency.

“Our characters are so different and when they first meet, they’re polar opposites. At when we get to the end of the movie, they’re still opposites, they just learned that they kind of have to get along,” Cavill, who plays Solo, explained on Monday’s Good Morning America“And playing with that, it’s been enormous fun throughout. It’s never boring because we can hate each other and like each other the same time.”

In the film, Hammer, who grew up in Los Angeles, had to perfect a Russian accent to portray Kuryakin. Fortunately, said the actor, it was easy to research the accent. “As an actor, one of the biggest resources you have is YouYube because it’s on YouTube. You can find anything. So yeah, I just watched a lot of videos,” he explained.

Although the film is based on the hit 1960s TV series of the same name, Hammer said the movie differs a bit.

“This is sort of an homage but at the same time it’s a reboot,” he clarified. “People that have grew up watching The Man from U.N.C.L.E. will be able to watch it and appreciate it and see the characters they love and remember the stories and how fun it was as a kid. But also people who have never seen The Man from U.N.C.L.E. will be able to watch thisand they don’t need context. They’re just gonna be able to enjoy it. It’s a fun ride.”

The Man from U.N.C.L.E., also starring Hugh Grant, is in theaters Friday.
