HBO Exec Hoping for Many More Seasons of “Game of Thrones”

Helen Sloan/HBO(LOS ANGELES) — The fifth season of the HBO hit Game of Thrones aired this year. How much longer will the fantasy drama remain on TV? The president of programming for HBO envisions at least a few more sessions.

Speaking Thursday at the Television Critics Association press tour in Beverly Hills, Michael Lombardo said, “Seven-seasons-and-out has never been the conversation. The question is, how much beyond the seven seasons are we going to do.”

He added that showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are “feeling like there are probably two more years after six. I would always love for them to change their minds but I think that’s what we’re looking at right now.”

Lombardo defended the violence depicted on Game of Thrones, which includes a brutal rape scene during season five. He said of the show’s producers, “I support them fully artistically.”

Lombardo also confirmed that Jon Snow, who was stabbed repeatedly in this year’s season finale, is indeed dead.

Season six is currently in production and will air in 2016.
