Nicki Minaj Clarifies VMA Twitter Comments; Says Taylor Swift Apologized over Phone

ABC/Ida Mae Astute(NEW YORK) — Barbz and Swifties can take their fingers off the Twitter trigger — their two favorite stars, Nicki Minaj and Taylor Swift, respectively, have worked things out.

Nicki confirmed Friday on Good Morning America that she and Taylor spoke on the phone Thursday and are “all good” after their Twitter spat following Tuesday’s announcement of the 2015 MTV Video Music Awards nominations.

“We spoke for a long time. We were cracking up laughing on the phone. It’s over, you guys,” Nicki declared.

The rapper sparked the firestorm by taking to social media to express her frustration that her music video for “Anaconda” wasn’t nominated for Video of the Year, the MTV Video Music Awards top award. “Anaconda” was nominated for Best Female Video and Best Hip-Hop Video.

“I posted something on my Instagram and it just showed the stats of other videos that had been nominated previously and there just seemed to be a little funny business going on,” Nicki explained.  “‘Anaconda’ had such a huge cultural impact and, on top of that, we broke the Vevo record and ‘Anaconda’ therefore should’ve been nominated.”

The rapper’s online comments called out the MTV Video Music Awards for allegedly “celebrating women with very slim bodies.”  Nicki added, “I do think if it was one of the pop girls, there would have many nominations for it.”

Nicki explained that she was just referring to the diversity she wants to see in music. “I think that we just have to have both images for girls,” she said. “We can’t have only one type of body being glorified in the media because it just makes girls even more insecure than we already are.”

Her tweet, however, was not interpreted that way at first by Taylor, whose “Bad Blood” music video famously features her gaggle of supermodel friends and was nominated for Video of the Year. The singer replied directly to Nicki’s tweet, claiming the rapper was trying to “pit women against each other.”  Swift later tweeted an apology, and Nicki said Friday Taylor also called to apologize.

“She was, you know, super, super sweet and she apologized,” Nicki explained. “She said, ‘You know, look I didn’t understand the big picture of what you were saying but now I get it.'”

Nicki said she hopes the two can work together in the future. “I’m sure we can,” she added. “You know why, because it takes a big person to do what Taylor did. …Sometimes we do things and we don’t think right away or we don’t investigate and we just talk so it was big of her to come out and say that.”
