Angelina Jolie Pitt Directing Drama for Netflix

ABC/Rick Rowell(NEW YORK) — Angelina Jolie Pitt is the latest A-list celebrity to sign on for a Netflix project.

She will direct and produce an adaptation of First They Killed My Father: A Daughter of Cambodia Remembers, a memoir from Cambodian author and human rights activist Loung Ung about surviving the deadly Khmer Rouge regime.

Saying she was “deeply affected” by the book, Jolie Pitt said Thursday in a statement, “It deepened forever my understanding of how children experience war and are affected by the emotional memory of it. And it helped me draw closer still to the people of Cambodia, my son’s homeland.”

Netflix says Jolie Pitt’s Cambodian-born son, Maddox, 13, will be involved in the production of the drama, which will premiere on the service in late 2016.

Jolie Pitt recently directed the 2014 film Unbroken and the upcoming drama By the Sea, in which she co-stars with her husband, Brad Pitt.

Netflix announced last month that Brad Pitt will star in a satirical comedy titled War Machine that will debut on its platform next year.
